Currently, they are widely used in initial impressions to obtain a preliminary model used for diagnostic purposes, treatment planning, and the fabrication of temporary prostheses or custom molds.

Alginic impression materials contain sodium alginate, calcium sulfate, trisodium phosphate, diatomite, zinc oxide, and potassium and titanium fluoride, all in powder form. When mixed with water, they form a colloidal solution through a reaction with the sodium or potassium salts of alginic acid and calcium sulfate. After this chemical reaction occurs, a quick-setting gel is formed as a result of the replacement of monovalent calcium by sodium and potassium cations, allowing for cross-linking of the alginate salts. There are many commercial variations of alginate that vary in consistency, setting time, elasticity, strength, and dimensional stability; manufacturers also include binders, which can impact their properties, application, setting time, and pouring time.

The physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of alginate can be affected by the time it is stored and the storage conditions before the gypsum model is produced. Compared to other impression materials, irreversible hydrocolloids have the disadvantages of low dimensional stability and reduced ability to reproduce details. Dental models obtained from impressions made with irreversible hydrocolloids tend to have less detail reproduction, particularly in areas with sharp angles, compared to those made with other impression materials such as elastomers. The dimensional stability of alginate is necessary to obtain reliable gypsum models from the impressions. It is recommended that impressions with irreversible hydrocolloids be poured immediately or within a few minutes after removal from the mouth to avoid distortions. Syneresis or inhibition when exposed to air or water can influence the dimensional stability of alginate, leading to less accurate models.

To overcome the issue of the recommended short pouring time after impression making, new irreversible hydrocolloids with longer pouring times have been developed, allowing for up to five days of storage. Since pouring time is an important factor in the dimensional stability of irreversible hydrocolloids and the resulting stone models, an investigation into these new materials is necessary. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the properties of irreversible hydrocolloid materials poured immediately and after different storage periods.

Professionals Involved in the Clinical Case Stéfani Becker RodriguesCarolina Rocha AugustoVicente Castelo Branco LeituneSusana Maria Werner SamuelFabrício Mezzomo CollaresDental Materials Laboratory, School […]

[91

post-3037","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-case-clinical
["GET
